Cover Story | Issue 1 Front Cover

This cover shows the interaction between Li+ (lithium-ion) and graphite, including Li intercalation and plating, in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) used in the field of energy storage and electric vehicles (EVs). For promoting the faster rechargeability and safety of LIBs without Li plating, the natures of graphite, solid electrolyte interphase formation, Li+ intercalation/plating behavior and the inner mechanisms of Li plating are desired to be investigated comprehensively. Meanwhile, the advancing detection methods of Li plating is essential for supporting the fast-charging ability and prompting the market adoption of EVs.

Cover Story | Issue 1 Back Cover

This cover shows the concept of sulfur-equivalent cathode materials, and their great potential to replace the problematic sulfur cathode to develop shuttle-free lithium-sulfur batteries through a solid-solid conversion pathway. Three typical types of sulfur-equivalent cathode materials as sulfurized carbon, sulfurized polymers and metal polysulfides, are highlighted to show their unique charge-discharge mechanism, compared with the sulfur cathode. Being free from the formation of soluble polysulfides, these sulfur-equivalent cathode materials may open a new way to develop lithium-sulfur batteries with truly high energy density and long cycle life.
